As reported, the ruling was issued by a Mumbai court on January 21, 2025, after Varma failed to appear for the hearing, prompting the magistrate to issue a non-bailable warrant for his arrest.
The court found Varma guilty under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which addresses the dishonour of cheques due to insufficient funds. In addition to the jail term, he has been ordered to pay a compensation of Rs 3.72 lakh (approximately $4,500) to the complainant within three months. Should he fail to comply with this order, he faces an additional three months in jail.
The case dates back to 2018, when a company named Shree, represented by Mahesh Chandra Mishra, filed a complaint against Varma’s firm for issuing a cheque that bounced due to insufficient funds. This legal battle has spanned over seven years, culminating in the recent verdict.
