Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava Sparks Historical Accuracy Debate
Chhaava is positioned as a grand cinematic portrayal of Maratha history, but Bollywood's track record with historical accuracy raises concerns.

The upcoming film Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, has ignited a significant debate regarding its historical accuracy.

The trailer has faced criticism for various inaccuracies, including a controversial dancing scene featuring the lead characters. Critics argue that such portrayals do not align with the dignity associated with historical figures like Sambhaji Maharaj.
Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, expressed his concerns about the film’s authenticity. He urged the filmmakers to consult historians to ensure a more accurate representation of events surrounding Sambhaji Maharaj’s life. He appreciated the film’s intention but emphasized the importance of preserving historical integrity.
Viewers have taken to social media to voice their dissatisfaction, pointing out specific elements they believe misrepresent Maratha history, such as the omission of significant phrases like “Hindavi Swarajya” and the inclusion of anachronistic elements.
One viewer lamented, “Why can’t we get a realistic historical movie?” highlighting frustrations over creative liberties taken in historical narratives.
As reported, in light of the backlash, director Laxman Utekar met with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray to seek guidance on addressing these concerns. Following this meeting, it was announced that the controversial dance scene would be removed from the film to better respect Sambhaji Maharaj’s legacy and avoid further controversy.
Utekar stated, “We had no intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments,” indicating a willingness to adapt the film in response to public sentiment.
Chhaava is positioned as a grand cinematic portrayal of Maratha history, but Bollywood’s track record with historical accuracy raises concerns. The upcoming film faces the challenge of balancing artistic expression with factual integrity.
