Christopher Nolan and his wife, Emma Thomas, were honoured by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, receiving a knighthood and damehood respectively for their significant contributions to the film industry.
This prestigious ceremony took place on December 18, 2024, and marked a notable recognition of their decades-long partnership in filmmaking.
Christopher Nolan is now “Sir Christopher Nolan,” while Emma Thomas holds the title “Dame Emma Thomas.” These titles are conferred for outstanding service and achievements in various fields, including the arts.
The event was part of the Investiture ceremonies, where the royal family celebrated various honorees. King Charles III expressed his admiration for their work, mentioning he had seen and enjoyed Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer.

The couple’s collaboration has produced several iconic films, including The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, and most recently, Oppenheimer. Their films are noted for their critical acclaim and box office success.
Nolan’s work has earned him multiple accolades, including his first Academy Award for Best Director for Oppenheimer, which also won Best Picture at this year’s Oscars.
Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas met while studying at University College London (UCL) and married in 1997. They co-founded their production company, Syncopy Inc., which has been instrumental in producing their films since Batman Begins.
The couple has four children together and continues to collaborate closely on all of Nolan’s directorial projects.
