Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh Face Backlash Over Daughter’s Name ‘Dua’
Trolls accuse that the couple had forgotten their cultural roots.
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have recently faced significant backlash for naming their daughter “Dua.”
The Bollywood couple, who announced the name on Diwali, described “Dua” as meaning a prayer, stating that she is “the answer to our prayers”.
While many fans and colleagues congratulated them, a vocal segment of social media users criticized the choice, arguing that it is not a traditional Indian name.
Critics on social media expressed their discontent, suggesting that names like “Prarthana,” which means prayer in Hindi, would have been more appropriate.
Comments included sentiments like, “Why Dua? Koi HINDU Naam Nahi Su’n’jha Kya?” (Why not a Hindu name?) and accusations that the couple had forgotten their cultural roots.
Some users went further, implying that the choice of a name with Urdu origins was a deliberate affront to Hindu sentiments.
Despite the backlash, many supporters defended the couple’s right to choose a name for their child. They emphasized that naming a child is a personal decision and questioned why others felt entitled to criticize it. Supporters pointed out that names like “Khan” have been common in Bollywood without similar outrage.
As discussions continue online, Deepika and Ranveer have yet to publicly address the controversy surrounding their daughter’s name.
