Game of Thrones Three-Eyed Raven Max von Sydow Dies at 90

Veteran Hollywood actor Max von Sydow, who played the iconic three-eyed raven in HBO’s popular Game of Thrones, passed away at the age of 90 in France. Originally belonging from Sweden, the actor then took French nationality and lived a great part of his life there.

“It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow,” said the actor’s agent Jean Diamond.

Born on April 10, 1929, Sydow made his Swedish film debut in 1949 whereas his first Hollywood appearance was in1965 release The Greatest Story Ever Told. Over the span of 70 years, he appeared in almost 200 film and television shows.

In addition to being known as the three-eyed raven for GoT, the actor is best known as the priest he played in The Exorcist.

Some of his famous movies include Wild Strawberries, Shame, The Seventh Seal, Hannah, and Her Sisters, Needful Things and Star Wars: The Force Awakens in which he briefly appeared.

With two academy nominations under his belt (1988 best actor and 2012 best supporting actor) and recent Emmy nomination for his Game of Thrones character, Sydow is renowned as the onscreen villain and offscreen gentleman.

“Max Von Sydow was something like a consummate actor, with pride in his art and a dedication to his craft that I’ve encountered in very few people in my life,” said Martin Scorsese, with whom Sydow worked in Shutter Island.
