Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 23 Years in Prison

Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in prison on Wednesday.

The disgraced former Hollywood producer will be formally registered as a sex offender.

He has been sentenced two weeks after a jury convicted him of sexual assault and rape.

He was found guilty of one count of first-degree criminal sexual act against the former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006, and one count of third-degree rape against the hairstylist Jessica Mann in 2013.

As being reported, his defense team is appealing the conviction and sought on Wednesday to have him released on bail in the meantime.

Weinstein addressed a packed Manhattan courtroom before the sentencing was delivered and said he had “deep remorse.” But he showed little contrition.

He also pushed back at the #MeToo movement, implying that it had gone too far.

“I am totally confused,” he said. “I think men are confused about all of this, this feeling of thousands of men and women who are losing due process, I’m worried about this country.”

“This is not the right atmosphere in the United States of America,” Weinstein added.

He further added that he had “serious friendships” with the two primary accusers in the case, Miriam Haley and Jessica Mann.

He was also convicted of third-degree rape on the charge of assaulting Jessica Mann, an actress, and hairdresser, who accused Weinstein of raping her at a DoubleTree Hotel in New York on March 18, 2013.

Haleyi and Mann also gave victim impact statements in court, urging the judge  Burke to give Weinstein the harshest possible sentence.
