If You Are A Hasan in Foreign Land, Hasan Minhaj Feels You

Hasan is presumably one of the most popular and easy to remember Asian names. We have a brother, uncle, cousin or nephew Hasan in every household and it’s just a short, nice name we all are familiar with. Hence there’s no way a person named Hasan has to correct (or remind) the right pronunciation of their name to anyone, ever. Like never.

But life isn’t a bad of roses for everyone, particularly for comedian Hasan Minhaj who has now resorted to a new name Timothée Chalamet, because of the uncountable times his name was mispronounced by the ‘gora’ people he is surrounded by!

The 33 year old comedian took this opportunity at Ellen’s show to educate people on his name’s correct pronunciation and recalled the numerous (read horrendous) pronunciations his name has gotten.

“The correct pronunciation of Hasan Minhaj’s name is ‘Has-en Min-haj’, not ‘Haseen Minaja’ or “Hussein’,” he recalled the names he’s been called while emphasizing on his correct pronunciation.

“I’m so sorry I can’t pronounce it. Meet my son, Higsby Witherthrottle III!” he laughed.

He then said something very important!

“If you can pronounce Ansel Elgort, you can pronounce Hasan Minhaj,” he said referring to The Fault In Our Stars actor who rather has an unusual name but hasn’t been mispronounced as ridiculously as the Patriot Act host.

So basically, Hasan just took a dig at Americans who seem to just somehow grasp an unusual and difficult name of a white person, but have a hard time in picking up an easy Asian name such as Hasan’s.

Out of curiosity, Ellen asked Hasan how does he manage at Starbucks where most names, other than the easiest English ones, are brutally mispronounced. Hassan replied, “At Starbucks, I go by Timothée Chalamet.”

Hasan’s interview has gone viral with 1 million+ YouTube views and 79K+ likes on Twitter, this just goes out to show that Hasan is not alone in this suffering. So if you too know a Hasan, tag them to let them know the blessing of correct pronunciation!
