Karla Sofía Gascón Apologizes for Past Islamophobic & Racist Tweets as Emilia Pérez Oscar Buzz Grows

Many of the social media posts, which date back to at least 2016, specifically criticise Islam and Muslims.

Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of Netflix’s Emilia Pérez and the first openly transgender actress nominated for an Oscar, has publicly apologized for resurfaced social media posts that contained Islamophobic and racist remarks.

The controversy erupted after journalist Sarah Hagi shared screenshots of Gascón’s past tweets, which date back to 2016 and include derogatory comments about Islam, Muslims, and the late George Floyd.

In her statement, Gascón expressed regret for the pain her words have caused, stating, “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain”.

Gascon said she was “deeply sorry to those I have caused pain” in a statement sent to AFP via a Netflix spokeswoman on Friday.

She had described Islam in highly offensive terms, labelling it as “an infection” and suggesting it should be banned. Additionally, she made disparaging remarks about George Floyd, referring to him as a “drug addict” and claiming that few cared about his death.

Following the backlash, Gascón deactivated her X account (formerly Twitter) and emphasized that she could no longer tolerate the “campaign of hate and misinformation” directed at her.

The timing of this controversy is particularly sensitive as Emilia Pérez is a strong contender for multiple Academy Awards, with Gascón being a frontrunner for Best Actress.

Critics are concerned that this incident may overshadow the film’s achievements and its message of inclusivity.
