Karla Sofía Gascón’s Chaotic CNN Interview Sparks Further Backlash

Gascón's nomination as the first transgender woman in an acting category at the Oscars has been overshadowed by this scandal.

Karla Sofía Gascón, the Oscar-nominated star of Emilia Pérez, is at the centre of a significant controversy following the resurfacing of her past tweets, which include offensive remarks about Islam and comments related to George Floyd.

During a recent CNN interview, Gascón defended her statements while expressing regret for any hurt caused, asserting that she does not identify as racist and has not committed any crime.

Despite her emotional pleas, Gascón’s defence has been met with doubt. Her blend of apologies and justifications has only intensified the controversy, prompting many to question her sincerity and the repercussions of her past remarks.

The controversy began when journalist Sarah Hagi highlighted tweets from Gascón dating from 2019 to 2024 that were deemed racist and anti-Islamic. These included criticisms of Muslim culture and a controversial take on George Floyd’s death, which sparked global protests against racial injustice.

Gascón has since deactivated her Twitter account and issued multiple apologies, stating, “I want to engage in the dialogue surrounding my past posts that have inflicted harm”.

In her hour-long interview with CNN en Español, Gascón became emotional as she attempted to justify her past comments. She described Floyd as someone who faced significant challenges in life but became a symbol for a cause after his death.

Gascón insisted that she never intended to insult anyone based on race and claimed her comments about Islam were directed at “radical Islam,” emphasizing her respect for a close Muslim friend.

When asked if she would renounce her Oscar nomination due to the backlash, Gascón firmly stated, “I cannot renounce a nomination because I have not committed any crime nor harmed anyone”

. Despite her attempts to clarify her statements and express remorse, many remain sceptical of her sincerity.

Gascón’s nomination as the first transgender woman in an acting category at the Oscars has been overshadowed by this scandal. Critics suggest that the controversy could jeopardize both her chances of winning and the film’s overall prospects at the Academy Awards.

As the Oscars approach, the situation continues to raise questions about accountability and the lasting consequences of social media remarks in today’s climate.
