Maverick Korean Director Kim Ki-duk dies of COVID-19 in Latvia, it emerges on Friday.
As per media reports, the 59-year-old award-winning South Korean filmmaker was apparently in the country to buy a property.
He was recently hospitalized due to symptoms of coronavirus, but treatment was unsuccessful and passed away due to the complications associated with COVID-19.
Kim Ki-duk made his debut as a director in 1996 with “Crocodile,” and he is the only South Korean director to win at all three major European film festivals: Cannes, Venice, and Berlin.
Kim Ki-duk was the recipient of Golden Lion at 69th Venice International Film Festival for Pietà.
He was awarded Silver Lion for Best Director at 61st Venice International Film Festival for 3-Iron, and a Silver Bear for Best Director at 54th Berlin International Film Festival for Samaria, and also Un Certain Regard prize at 2011 Cannes Film Festival for Arirang.
His other famous credits include Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring, Moebius, Pieta, 3-Iron, and Amen.
However, the award-winning director shunned public appearances in Korea since he was accused of sexually assaulting actresses while filming in 2017.
