Legendary playwright Shoaib Hashmi passes away after prolonged illness

Pakistan has lost another feather in the cap!

Legendary playwright Shoaib Hashmi passed away after a prolonged illness in Lahore on Monday.

He was 84 years old.

Revered playwright, actor, teacher, and literary genius remained bedridden for over a decade as his health deteriorated after a stroke.

As reported,  he was unable to speak or walk by himself for a long time,

Hashmi, who was the husband of artist and educationist Salima Hashmi, was also a professor of economics.

He is well known for his contributions to Pakistan Television, Shoaib appeared in several dramas in the 70s.

Some of his iconic productions for PTV include Akkar Bakkar, Sach Gup, Taal Matol, and Balila.

Shoaib Hashmi received the best performance award in 1995 and was also honored with the Tamgha Imtiaz.

He had been associated with teaching at the Government College Lahore (GCL).

Hashmi held a Master’s degree in Economics from Government College, Lahore, MSc from the London School of Economics.

He also studied theatre at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London.

Hashmi also wrote extensively for the theatre and translated a few books as well.

One of his most notable works of translations was A Song for This Day: 52 poems by his father-in-law Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
