Mahira, Momina Turn Down Fairness Products’ Endorsements

In the wake of recent spark in the Black Lives Matter movement that initially began in the US and has now taken over the globe, a lot of other deep-rooted and conditioning systems are being highlighted too. One such issue that has come under discussion is colorism, a longstanding crooked idea that white means beautiful and any complexion less than that translates as ugly.

More often than not, celebrities are also condemned for promoting the same ideology by enduring whitening products, fairness creams, whitening soaps, etc. Earlier it was Sajal Ali who irked her fans by doing so and now Zara Noor Abbas was questioned on her choices. Seeing the trend, anchorperson Haroon Rasheed took to Twitter and asked an interesting question.

“This is a genuine question – can you name me Bollywood/Pakistani stars who have never endorsed a skin lightening product?” tweeted the BBC Asia correspondent.

Delightfully, two Pakistani prominent stars Mahira Khan and Momina Mustehsan gave an affirmative answer.

“Been refusing ever since I was a VJ till now. Never endorsed a skin lightening product,” tweeted Mahira Khan in response.

Retweeting the Humsafar actress’s tweet, Momina too gave her answer.

“Same here,” said the Coke Studio sensation, “Always turned down all fairness product endorsements. The amount of melanin in your skin has nothing to do with how beautiful you are.”

“If we ALL responsibly refuse whitening endorsements, it might cause a shift in the market. We have the power to change the narrative,” the Afreen singer rightly summed up.

Kudos to Mahira and Momina for standing their ground and here’s hoping more stars would take inspiration from the two and say no to whitening product’s ads.
