Meghan Markle Terms George Floyd’s Killing ‘Devastating’

Recalling her childhood where she witnessed racial based violence and now the killing of African-American George Floyd, Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle termed the events as ‘devastating’. While speaking virtually to the graduating class of her former high school Immaculate Heart, Los Angeles, the Duchess seemed to be both saddened by the death of Floyd and made efforts to inspire the young students.

“What is happening in our country and in our state and in our hometown of LA has been absolutely devastating,” said Meghan.

She continued, “I wanted to say the right thing. I realized the only wrong thing to say is to say nothing because George Floyd’s life mattered and Breonna Taylor’s life mattered and Philando Castile’s life mattered and Tamir Rice’s life mattered,” while adding that all the people whose names were not known, their lives mattered as well.

Markle also spoke of the 1992 LA riots after killing of a black taxi driver by four cops. Seeing it as a young deeply impacted her, and Meghan felt sorry for the kids who still have to witness the same racial based violence.

“I remember the curfew and I remember rushing back home and […] I remember pulling up at the house and seeing the tree, that had always been there, completely charred. And those memories don’t go away,” the Duchess spoke.

Nonetheless, Meghan tried to end her six-minute-long speech with a positive note.

“We’re seeing people stand in solidarity, we are seeing communities come together and to uplift. You are going to be part of this movement,” concluded the Duchess of Sussex.
