Mexican star commits suicide over #MeToo allegation

A heartbroken Mexican star finished with his life on Monday after posting a suicide letter on his Twitter handle. The singer said he planned to kill himself in a “radical declaration of innocence”. The musician declared he was falsely and anonymously accused of molesting a minor girl.

The 64-year-old Armando Vega Gil, the founder of rock band Botellita de Jerez, was found dead at his Mexico City home.

The investigation sources confirmed that Vega was anonymously accused on social media via the #MeTooMusicosMexicanos (#MeTooMexicanMusicians) of molesting a girl when she was 13-years-old.

“I categorically deny this accusation,” the musician tweeted before his suicide.

“Let me make it clear that my death is not a confession of guilt, on the contrary it is a radical declaration of my innocence. I just want to clear the path my son will walk in the future,” he added.

One of a representative for the band Botellita de Jerez, Paola Hernandez, said she had a conversation with the star some two hours before his death.

Hernandez said during a radio interview, “he was really sad and pissed off, he didn’t know how to clear his name. He said he wasn’t guilty … he was worried about how his son would take all this.”

The death of Vega Gil has sparked a debate on Mexican social media whether he was innocent or guilty.
