As reported, Police have reached out to the FIA to tackle the issue of misinformation on social media.
Recent rumours regarding an alleged attack on Mufti Tariq Masood have been officially denied.
Thursday saw reports circulating on social media claiming that he was injured and that his driver was killed in an armed attack near Ghaghar Phatak, Karachi.
Such claims were at first categorically dismissed by Maulana Mohammad Nadeem, a spokesperson for Jamia Tur Rasheed, who stated that the news is “fake and unfounded” and confirmed that Mufti Tariq Masood is “safe and sound”
Later, in a statement shared on social media, Mufti Tariq Masood himself reassured his followers, saying, “By the grace of God, I am absolutely fine” and emphasized that no such incident occurred.
The rapid spread of the false reports caused significant concern among his supporters, who were alarmed by the misinformation circulating on social media.
On the other hand, in response to the spread of false reports about attacks on scholars in Karachi, the government has decided to take action against those responsible for circulating these rumours. Police have reached out to the FIA to tackle the issue of misinformation on social media.
According to the police, all accounts involved in spreading these rumours will be handed over to the FIA. Over the past two days, false claims of gunfire targeting scholars’ vehicles in various parts of Malir have been circulating.
Several images of scholars, along with doctored photos of gunfire, have gone viral, creating “unnecessary panic.” Authorities have pledged to take strict action against those responsible for spreading such misinformation.
It is pertinent to mention here that, Masood, a well-known religious scholar recognized for his views on “multiple marriages,” is facing blasphemy allegations stemming from a recent speech.
In the wake of the social media backlash, an FIR for “blasphemy” was filed against Masood at a police station in Karachi.
In response, he released a video statement on social media, clarifying his remarks and apologizing for any misunderstandings.
