Oxford University to honour Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

Pakistani Sufi maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will be awarded an honorary degree by Oxford University, at a ceremony called ‘Encaenia’ on June 26.

In a statement, Oxford University stated: “Born into a family whose name has become synonymous with South Asian musical tradition, he began formal training at the age of seven and has since released more than 50 albums, performed in numerous high-profile concerts across the world and amassed a global following, achieving over one billion views online”.

“Rahat Ali Khan has sung more than 50 title tracks of television serials and over 100 film songs in both Hollywood and Bollywood,” the statement further added.

As being reported famed Pakistani singer is among eight people who will be awarded honorary degrees at the ceremony.

It was earlier in 2017 when Oxford also named a rehearsal hall named after him “the Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Music Room”, making him the first ever South Asian artist to receive such an honour.

Being the nephew of world-famous Qawali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat has taken on the responsibility of carrying forward his 600-year-old family legacy by spreading qawwali to audiences across the world.
