Rahat Fateh Ali Khan who has mesmerized us over the years with his iconic songs like Jia Dhadak Dhadak, Mai Tenu Samjhawan Ki and O Re Piya has got another feather in his hat. The maestro has now been awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Oxford University.
The ceremony took place in London yesterday, where Rahat was awarded Doctor of Music degree amidst cheers of fans and family.
A little before the ceremony, Rahat commented, “I am honoured to be accepting this degree from Oxford University, a world-famous educational institution. This will be a very special day for not just me and my family but also for my fans who have shared this journey with me.”
“To be presented with this honour is a massive achievement and I am happy that my music has allowed me to reach such incredible heights,” the classical singer added.
Oxford University has recognized Rahat’s contribution to music in the past as well, and the singer has a music hall named after him, in the university.
In addition to attending his degree award ceremony, Rahat will be performing in Oxford Town Hall today (June 27) where he’ll be performing on his popular classical songs. The money coming in from today’s event will be contributed to the Faculty of Music’s Sounds of South Asia Series.
