The case has been in court for long and following hearings with no significant development, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered early disposal of the Ali Zafar, Meesha Shafi harassment case stating no unnecessary adjournments would be granted.
The bench further instructed the the high court order that was passed in April would be followed. It also instructed the counsels representing Ali and Meesha respectively to cross-examine the witnesses on the same day.
According to the bench’s instructions, affidavits of the witnesses need to be filed within seven days and an advance copy to be necessarily sent to the respondent for preparation. The witnesses have been told to be produced on the same day for cross examination to begin.
Last month, the Lahore High Court had set aside a lower court directive mandating a conclusion to the defamation case by 15th April, giving petitioners three months more. Meesha Shafi had then challenged LHC’s ruling in the apex court.
Last year, in April, Meesha Shafi accused singer Ali Zafar of sexual harassment. Meesha made the revelation on social media where Ali Zafar categorically denied each claim and went for legal proceedings against Meesha, filing a defamation suit.
