Alif Episode-1 Review: Saturday night prime time binge has arrived!

Finally, the much anticipated and awaited drama series Alif has arrived. It seems like Saturdays are going to have a binge-worthy prime time on Geo Entertainment. The comeback series by Umera Ahmed based on the namesake novel and stellar directorial by Haseeb Hassan has made as all pretty excited to watch Alif, comprising of huge star-cast that includes Hamza Ali Abbasi, Sajal Ali, Osman Khalid Butt, Ahsan Khan, Kubra Khan, Manzar Sehbai, Saleem Mairaj, and Lubna Aslam.

The first episode establishes the main characters upon whom the story will further develop. From the very beginning, it’s worth worthy to watch. It seems like Alif will be brining the classical Pakistani drama flavour, with all the elements that include dialogue, acting, scenes coordination and most important a story. It’s only the first episode and everything is spot on. Credit is due to the Motion Content for bringing such a brillant piece of work to the screens.

Those who have already read the novel Alif have an idea of what this drama is going to be all about. But if you haven’t, let us tell you. The story of Alif is based upon the letters of Husn e Jahan, the actress, and dancer who lost her love. She keeps writing to her husband but never posts these letters. This character is being played by Kubra Khan, mother of Momin and her husband’s character is yet to arrive.

The episode kicks off with the debut child star Pehlaj, who is playing the younger version of Hamza Ali Abbasi. The kid desperately wants to meet his dad and for that reason starts writing to Allah Mian, with a wish that God will send his father soon.

The story carries forward in two timelines simultaneously, demanding the viewer’s more concentrations. And at the same time, the camera work and cinematography are a treat to watch. There is a story of calligraphy involved in the play as well and we can see so many calligraphy pieces exhibited and there is a connection to it, wait how the story unfolds in coming episodes, it’s just the beginning!

Sajal as Momina Sultan is winning hearts, a young struggling soap actress who is in need of money to arrange for her brother’s kidney transplant.

Hamza Abbasi leaves an impression, playing Momin, a rude arrogant film director. He has got a plate full of attitude and has a history behind it. The very first meeting between Momina and Momin did not go well, it will be interesting to watch how the chemistry between them develops.

Momin has got a quite fan following, female actresses would die to seek his attention. The first episode shows two film stars played by Sadaf Kwanl and Yashma Gill. It will be interesting to watch them both playing hard to get Momin’s attention

But, Momina fails to get casted in Momin’s film and is in grief, blaming herself for this attitude, and questions Allah for her faith. She also seems to be interested in calligraphy. As she draws Allah’s name but with her lipstick, the struggling actress who can not afford proper crafts for calligraphy.

The main caligrapher’s character is played by Manzar Sehbai, the veteran actor who is also making his comeback to the screen with this Alif. He plays the grandfather of Momin, and both seem to be not in good terms with each other.

The character of Ahsan Khan and a few other, are yet to arrive, this episode leaves us eagerly waiting for the second episode to arrive.
