Yunhi Episode-1 Review: Beginning of an intense story based on family ties

Bilal Asharaf makes his TV debut

Yunhi the newly started drama serial on Hum TV is marking Maya Ali’s comeback at Hum Tv after 6 years and it is also marking Bilal Ashraf’s debut on TV. Yunhi is penned by Sarwat Nazir and directed by Mohammad Etheshamuddin. It is for the very first time we will watch Bilal and Maya together on screens and it has the cast including Behroze Sabzwari, Deepak Perwani, Tazeen Hussain Tahira Imam, Manzoor Qureshi, Maha Hassan, Khaqan Shahnawaz, Uzma Baig, Saad Faridi, Laiba Khurram and others.

The opening scene is of a household where there is a patriarch ( Manzoor Hussain) telling his grandson Daniyal to pick up Dr Naveed Ali from the airport tomorrow early in the morning. Grandson asks who is he to which he replied he is my nephew. Well, this Dr Naveed Ali has a history. Then we have shown Behroze Subzswari’s character who is the son of Bao jee his fake moustaches are a big turn-off.

Well, the story is that Dr Naveed Ali was engaged to Bao Jee’s daughter Khursheed for four years but then Dr Naveed leaves for America for further studies and eventually ends up breaking his four years long engagement not realizing that Khursheed is waiting for him. Khursheed took this to her heart and died after two years of this heartbreak having Tuberculosis. The whole family blames Naveed for her death and they are not ready to forgive him. Well, why the family blames Naveed for her death as died of TB?

It is so refreshing to see Tanzeen Hussain back on screen as Iqbal (Baali Phupho) It seems that she has a backstory her house has broken because of her sister’s broken engagement. Is it for real? I don’t find her track much convincing. The show is based on family ties. There are interesting characters such as Daniyal, his sister and his other phupho and his cousin whom he flirts with. The comic timings of some characters are really good.

We have been introduced to our lead characters in quite a unique manner. Dawood is shown as a pious and kind self-righteous guy who is judged by Kim as a “terrorist” because of his Sharaee getup. Kim seems to get intrigued by Dawood and he is a bit crossed to hear her calling him a ” terrorist” Well I find it a bit stereotyped. Dr Naveed begs forgiveness from his uncle by giving him his late daughter’s sake, he is forgiven. Daniyal and his cute sister are bantering over him trying to impress Kim is simply hilarious. Kim does understand Urdu and she understands what they are talking about her. What a classy start to an intense play!
