Yunhi Episode-2 Review: Quite a cliched character portrayal of the US based Kim

Naveed is feeling remorse for his past

Hum TV drama serial Yunhi is down with its second episode and despite having a classy feeling to the play, the cliched character portrayal of its female protagonist is a big turn-off. Other performances are superb. In the previous episode, it is established that it is the beginning of an intense play about family ties. This episode turns out to be quite disappointing at places where Kim has been shown, her character portrayal is a total failure.

One of the best things about this play is the attention to its setting and other details but what they have missed out on has a huge impact on the overall storytelling. Naveed tells the family that Kim not only knows Urdu but she also knows how to read it too. Well to a girl who is raised in America and taught to learn and understand Urdu, how come she is so oblivion of cultural and moral values? A major writing flaw!

Secondly, as we have mentioned before she does not even look like an American national. Her accent is not near to American nor is her manners. So basically this is a flaw on part of the direction. We want to see more of Dawood but unfortunately, we see him only in the ending scene of this episode. The character portrayal and overuse of the term “Terrorist” are what make her character look cliched and not appealing.

Deepak Parwani has given a brilliant performance when shown as a person who is in deep remorse. Guilt is not leaving him. We have seen him meeting a good old friend and there he bits open up about himself. He was forced by his Taya to marry his cousin with whom he has no compatibility. Our sympathies start developing for Naveed and it seems so unfair that the whole family is blaming Naveed as the ” Qatil” of their sister when she died of tuberculous not heartbreak.

Daniyal is quite an interesting character and so is his sister Suraiya. I even like Daniyal’s cousin with whom he is flirting. All characters are well portrayed except Kim. Well, Kim can only use an English commode and for that, she was temporarily been shifted to Dawood’s room. Dawood is on night duty so no one bothers her sleeping in the room. The ending scene is so filmy when out of nowhere Dawood makes his entry and he lies down on the bed. While Kim on her way back from the toilet nonchalantly lies on the same bed. They both get shocked to find each other in the bed! An interesting situation builds up but we have seen this many times on screen.
