Pakistani drama industry hardly fails to amaze us and for over the last decade or so our television has produced masterpieces of its own kind. This year was no different as aced directors and brilliant writers jotted down some exceptional drama shows for our entertainment and we can’t help but praise these dramas as the year is coming to an end.
2019 saw some absolutely hit drama serials and while our list isn’t in a particular order, some of these shows are our personal favorite. Others have mainly made it to the list because of their massive popularity among audiences.
Mere Pas Tum Ho
Probably the most popular drama of the year. MPTH is a drama everyone is currently talking about whether for good reasons or bad. This Humayun Saeed, Ayeza Khan and Adnan Siddiqui starrer has achieved new heights in drama industry as it has also become a viral social media topic. The drama still continues to top the charts with the outgoing year and there’s no stopping its popularity.
Cheekh
When it comes to issue based dramas, Cheekh topped our list for its gutsy and bold topic. The plus point of this Saba Qamar starrer was the acting of its antagonist Bilal Abbas who wooed the fans with his villainous character. At the time of its airing, Cheekh successfully became the most popular serial and ended on a high note.
Ishq Zahe Naseeb
Story of Sameer (Zahid Ahmed) and Shakira (Yumna Zaidi) folded in complicated knits of split personality disorder and past details, Ishq Zahe Naseeb is one of the finest dramas of its time. While the drama hasn’t broken records of success, it has successfully hooked its own audience segment into the storyline that has captivated everyone to the core.
Ranjha Ranjha Kardi
Ranjha Ranjha Kardi came out as a kickstart to Imran Ashraf’s career who albeit being known for versatility hadn’t achieved much for his credit. The drama starring Iqra Aziz as Noori alongside the mentally challenged Bhola (Imran) left fans with a deep message and some humor references forever to cherish.
Ruswai
Starring Sana Javed and Mikaal Zulfiqar in lead roles, Ruswai has triggered a much sensitive yet constantly prevailing evil of our society i.e. rape and the aftermath of the victim’s life. The ongoing drama is still in its plot’s infancy but from the looks of it, is becoming highly captivating for its thickening plot and compelling storyline.
Khaas
Khaas stood out as the social voice of the year. This Sanam Baloch starrer addressed a very important issue of toxic masculinity and how it impacts the spouse at the receiving end. The other leads of the drama Haroon Shahid and Ali Rehman both garnered the audience’s attention for their roles at two different spectra. The drama, ranging from emotional abuse to standing against it, showed a woman’s journey in an unprecedented manner.
Alif
Presumably the most underrated brilliance of our television at this time, Alif is one of our personal favorites. The drama, stands out of the lot as it discusses neither human evil nor love and subtly resonates with the spiritual aspect of our being. This Hamza Ali Abbasi, Sajal Aly, and Kubra Khan starrer take an unconventional approach on Pakistani television that has always been accustomed to human emotions only and probably this is one of the reasons that it hasn’t hit high on TRPs so far.
To sum it up, 2019 was a phenomenal year for Pakistani television and the makers once again proved their mettle in the genre. As we enter into 2020, here’s hoping that our TV screens would have much more to offer, and many more subjects to explore.
