Asim Abbasi responds to backlash and critiques hurled at same-sex storyline of Barzakh
Asim suggests those who find queer and non-heteronormative narratives "distasteful" to simply not watch it

Asim Abbasi, the writer and director of “Barzakh,” has responded to the backlash and critiques regarding the same-sex storyline in the Zee 5 web series.
He emphasized that his intention with “Barzakh” was to explore complex themes, including belief systems and societal norms, within a fictional setting that allows for a nuanced examination of these topics.
Things went south for the Pakistani audiences of the series after the latest episode of Barzakh featured a near-kiss moment between the two characters.
Asim suggests those who find queer and non-heteronormative narratives “distasteful” to simply not watch it, reaffirming his stance that he will always champion the rights of all in his storytelling.
Abbasi believes that storytelling should reflect diverse experiences and identities, which is why he has included LGBTQ+ narratives in his work. He asserts that representation is crucial and hopes that viewers will appreciate the depth and authenticity of the characters and their stories.
Abbasi has previously received positive feedback for his inclusive storytelling in his series “Churails,” where queer stories played a significant role. He noted that such representation has had a meaningful impact, with viewers finding personal resonance and sometimes even coming out to their families after watching the show.
