Black Artists Demand Hollywood Takes Responsibility Against Racism

As the Black Lives Matter movement paced up around the US, Hollywood’s black artists have also come forward to demand that their fraternity takes responsibility against racism and play its part to repair the damage caused by the long history of white supremacy.

In an open letter including signatories like Idris Elba, Billy Porter, Chadwick Boseman, and Queen Latifah, over 300 black actors have demanded that the industry should play a protective part to bring change.

“It is time for Hollywood to acknowledge its role and take on the responsibility of repairing the damage and being a proactive part of the change,” said the letter released on Tuesday.

The letter demanded that as a part of Hollywood’s effort to bring change, studios should employ more black people, divest in police by terminating police officers employed in studios and invest in anti-racism content.

Hollywood “encourages the epidemic of police violence and culture of anti-Blackness” and should make efforts to “end the intentional glorification of police brutality and corruption in our storytelling”, the letter said.

Alongside the black actors, Black Lives Matter and Color of Change were also among the signatories of the letter.
