Cake or Motorcycle Girl, which Pakistani film should win an Oscar nomination?

For the 6th sequential year and the upcoming 91st Academy Awards, the Pakistani Academy Selection Committee has requested filmmakers to submit their films for consideration for the ‘Foreign Language Film Award’ category by August 20, 2018.

The committee is chaired by two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and includes Kamila Shamshie, HM Naqvi, Saira Kazmi, Hadiqa Kiani, Ali Sethi, Zoe Viccaji, Nadeem Farooq Paracha, Nabila Maqsood, Khalid Malik, and Faisal Qureshi. Once the entries are submitted, they will pick one of them as Pakistan’s official submission for the ‘Foreign Language Film Award’ and announce it by September 2018.

This year, while our cinemas screened a number of flops, we feel Cake and Motorcycle Girl both proved to be films that showcased the industry’s true potential.

Where Cake dealt with a dysfunctional Sindhi family that can be universally related with, Motorcycle Girl narrated the real-life story of Zenith Irfan smashing stereotypes and talking about women empowerment.
