Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Punjab 95’ Faces Delay: Release Pushed Beyond February 7 Amid CBFC Hurdles
Punjab 95 is a biopic focused on Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist from Punjab.

Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming film Punjab 95, which centres on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, will not be released on its previously scheduled date of February 7, 2025.
Dosanjh, who plays the lead in the film, announced the delay via social media, stating, “We are very sorry and it pains us to inform you that the movie Punjab ’95 will not release on 7th Feb due to circumstances beyond our control”.
The film has faced significant challenges, including 120 cuts suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has delayed its release for over a year.
Although there was anticipation for an international release, the producers have not confirmed whether it will be shown in India due to ongoing issues with the CBFC.
The film was originally titled “Ghalughara,” referencing the Ghalughara massacre, and was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in 2022, as reported by Indian media. However, the CBFC raised objections to the title and demanded 120 cuts in the movie.
Intervention by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, the apex Sikh religious body, led to the CBFC retracting its demand for cuts, though it insisted on a title change. Consequently, the film was renamed ‘Punjab 95.’ A trailer released in 2022 was removed within 24 hours.
The movie was scheduled to premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) but was withdrawn a day before the event.
According to Variety, the withdrawal was linked to political factors, given Canada’s significant Sikh population, the second-largest after India. TIFF organizers neither confirmed nor denied these claims.
