Festival de Cannes 2023: Ruben Östlund nominated as president of jury

Michael Douglas to receive honorary Palme at the 76th edition of the prestigious event.

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is set to run from May 16 to May 27, 2023.

The lasted we get to know is that the Swedish director Ruben Östlund has been nominated as president of the jury for the 76th edition of the Festival de Cannes.

Östlund himself is a Cannes staple who has won the Palme d’Or two times; in 2017 and 2022.

The jury panel for this year’s festival includes actors Marvel’s Brie Larson and Paul Dano, directors Maryam Touzani, Rungano Nyoni, Damián Szifrón, and Julia Ducournau, as well as Afghan author Atiq Rahimi and French actor Denis Ménochet.

The jury will choose the Palme d’Or winner from 21 competition films.

While the awards ceremony will take place on May 27th.

 

This year’s screening at Cannes includes premieres for the new Indiana Jones and Martin Scorsese films, and Johnny Depp’s comeback film, “Jeanne du Barry”.

Furthermore, Hollywood film star Michael Douglas will receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the organisers announced on Wednesday.

The award recognises the 78-year-old’s “brilliant career and engagement with cinema” and there will be a homage to the actor during the opening ceremony on May 16, the announcement said.

He has been among the biggest stars of the 1980s and 1990s, appearing in a string of steamy thrillers such as “Basic Instinct” and “Fatal Attraction”

Douglas won an Academy Award for his iconic role as banker Gordon Gekko in 1987’s “Wall Street”,

While his first foray into filmmaking as a producer of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest” in 1975, also won him an Oscar.
