Ali Kazmi starer Funny Boy is all set to represent Canada in the 93rd Academy Awards

Indo-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta’s featured film Funny Boy is all set to represent Canada in the 93rd Academy Awards for the Best International Feature Film category.

The film is based upon Shyam Selvadurai’s best-selling novel Funny boy, starring Brandon Ingram, Nimmi Harasgama, Ali Kazmi, Agam Darshi, and Arush Nand. The movie revolves around a young male protagonist and his sexual awakening and is dated back to the times of Tamil-Sinhalese conflict in the 1970s and 1980s.

The news was shared a few hours earlier on the Twitter handle of Telefilm Canada;

“And the film representing Canada for Best International Feature Film at the #Oscars2021 is FunnyBoyTheFilm! Congrats! Hear director Deepa Mehta’s reaction when our Executive Director Christa D called to break the news! Spoiler: this might make you smile. A lot. (sic)”

The tweet also shared an audiotape of Mehta’s reaction when the executive director Christa Dickenson called her to share the big news!

“That says so much about our country. It really does. It says so much about inclusion. I’m so happy,” Deepa Mehta said ecstatically.

This is the second Oscar nomination for the director, she was first nominated in 2007 for her third film, in the Elements trilogy, Water.
