‘Harry Potter’ TV Series Will Delve ‘More In-Depth’ Into Books Than Films, Warner Bros. TV Boss Promises
'Harry Potter' TV Series is likely to hit HBO in 2026
Warner Bros. TV boss Channing Dungey has revealed that the upcoming Harry Potter series will offer a more in-depth exploration of the beloved book series compared to the original films. Speaking about the highly anticipated show, Dungey emphasized that the series aims to stay closer to J.K. Rowling’s novels, providing fans with a richer, more detailed adaptation.
During her appearance at Mipcom in Cannes, Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. TV Group, shared that the writing team is already in place, and they are progressing with their tasks. She also revealed that casting calls have begun in the U.K. and Ireland, indicating that the project is moving forward.
Dungey expressed her excitement about working within the Harry Potter universe, describing it as “a truly unbelievable dream.”
As a dedicated fan of the books, she highlighted the opportunity to delve deeper into the storylines than what is possible within a two-hour film, saying, “That’s exactly why we’re embarking on this journey.
In addition to discussing the upcoming Harry Potter series, the Warner Bros. senior executive also addressed another show surrounded by rumours and speculation: Ted Lasso Season 4.
“We are in conversations about season four, and they are very exciting conversations, but it’s still early days,” said Dungey, who also hinted at a major returning name who had — as yet — not been confirmed.
“We had always been clear that there wasn’t going to be more ‘Ted Lasso’ if Jason [Sudeikis] and team weren’t feeling excited about it, and I can tell you firsthand that he’s in a place where he’s feeling really excited and feels good about it.”
The Harry Potter TV series was announced earlier in April this year.

The series is expected to be on air in 2026, according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,” Zaslav told Wall Street analysts on the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call. “I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [Bloys, CEO of HBO] and Channing [Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros Television] and we spent some real time with JK and her team,” he enthused.
“Both sides just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great.”
