Joker dominates Oscar nominations with 11 nods

Joker, Todd Phillips’ supervillain origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role of R-rated box-office smasher, dominates  Academy Awards nominations with 11 nods in various categories.

Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese’s elegiac crime epic The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino’s 1960s Los Angeles fairy tale Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Sam Mendes’ World War I tale 1917, lag behind closely with 10 nods apiece.

For this year’s Oscars nominations there come a few surprises as well, for instance, Frozen 2, the highest-grossing animated film ever, was passed over. Likewise, Beyonce (The Lion King) missed out on her first Oscar nomination, for best song.

It is for the 87th time that the academy selected all-male directing nominees neglecting female directors,  despite a year in which women made historic achievements behind the camera.
