Netflix Omits the Controversial Suicide Scene from 13 Reasons Why

Popular teen show 13 Reasons Why, that faced severe backlash for its last scene of season 1 – portraying suicide of protagonist Hannah – has now taken down the scene from its archive. The decision has come on the back of advice from a medical board that suggested Netflix to omit the scene.

Taking it to its official Twitter, Netflix announced that respecting the decision of medical board and concerns of parents, the streaming site has decided to remove the controversial scene where the teen heroine slits her wrists in a bathtub. The decision has come after taking in confidence maker Brian Yorkey and producer of 13 Reasons Why.

“We’ve heard from many young people that 13 Reasons Why encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide,” wrote Netflix in a statement.

Earlier the web series and its content was widely criticized for ‘glorifying suicide’ amongst teens. American Association of Suicidology, Parents Television Council and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention were among groups that demanded the show to amend its explicitly.
