‘No Other Land’ Earns 2025 Oscar Nod for Best Documentary, Spotlighting Palestinian Displacement and Resilience

Despite its critical acclaim, No Other Land has struggled to secure a distributor in the United States.

No Other Land, a documentary co-directed by Palestinian journalist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham, has garnered significant attention following its nomination for Best Documentary Feature at the 2025 Academy Awards.

The film explores the expulsion of Palestinians from Masafer Yatta, a village in the occupied West Bank, and highlights the contrasting living conditions of its subjects, particularly focusing on the friendship between Adra and Abraham.

The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2024, where it won the Berlinale Documentary Film Award and the Panorama Audience Award for Best Documentary Film.

Following its success at Berlinale, it has also received accolades from various organizations, including the Gotham AwardsInternational Documentary Association, and Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.

Abraham’s acceptance speech at Berlinale drew attention for its poignant commentary on the disparities between Palestinian and Israeli lives, calling for an end to apartheid and occupation. This speech led to a backlash in Israel, with Abraham facing death threats after being labelled as “anti-Semitic” for his remarks. Despite this, he affirmed his commitment to his message, stating, “I stand behind every word”.

Despite its critical acclaim, No Other Land has struggled to secure a distributor in the United States. This situation reflects a broader trend within the film industry, where projects that critique Israeli policies face significant hurdles in gaining traction.

Adra has expressed hope that an Oscar nomination could help raise awareness about the issues depicted in the film and assist in finding a distributor in the U.S.

With its powerful narrative and critical recognition, No Other Land not only aims to document a pressing humanitarian issue but also seeks to inspire action and awareness regarding the ongoing struggles faced by Palestinians.
