Oscars 2021: Chloe Zhao Creates History by Winning Best Director For Nomadland

History was created at the 93rd annual Academy Awards that took place in Los Angeles on Sunday evening, as Chloe Zhao became the first woman of colour and the second female to win the best director award for Nomadland.

2021 saw Oscars taking place in a totally different way owing to the ongoing pandemic; the ceremony is socially distanced and had a very pared-back red carpet with just 170 guests in attendance.

Furthermore, all the attendees wore masks when off-camera during this year’s ceremony, and a pre-show telecast featured performances of all five songs that were nominated for Best Original Song.

It was the first time this year that the majority of the Best Actor nominees are actors of color.

Daniel Kaluuya won the Actor in a Best Supporting Role for Judas And The Black Messiah. With this honor, he becomes only the 10th Black male to win in the best acting category.

Meanwhile, “Soul,” which took home the best-animated feature award, is also Pixar’s first film to feature a Black character in the lead.

Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, two-thirds of the hairstyling and makeup team behind “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” also made history at the 93rd annual Academy Awards. The pair are the first Black women to receive a nomination for best makeup and hairstyling and became the first to win.

Youn Yuh-Jung becomes the first-ever Korean to win the Academy Award this year in the Best Supporting Actress category for Minari
