Senate passes resolution on ‘Royalties for Artists’

Senate has passed a resolution for artist royalties!

The resolution was introduced by Senator Faisal Javed Khan which was passed unopposed on Monday

Several celebrities have raised the issue regarding royalties, which are payments made to artists when a project that they have worked on gets re-run or reused in any other way.

 

“Cognisant of the fact that the artists from [the] entertainment industry have been facing the issue of rightful and just royalties for a long time, [an issue that is] tantamount to misuse of copyrights, [we have] submitted a resolution in the Senate of Pakistan regarding royalties for artists,” Javed tweeted on the accomplishment.

“Objective is to empower the Copyright Board to fix the royalties for licensing and assignment of work and ensure the payments to the artists whenever their work is used in any mode,” he further added.

 

 

Celebrities took to social media to cheer on the development

 

“Finally! It was due for a long time,” wrote actor Adnan Siddiqui on Twitter.

“Our artists deserve security and due recognition of their work.”

 

Humayun Saeed lauded the development in a tweet as he congratulated the TV/Film fraternity.  “@SenatePakistan has unanimously passed a resolution with the objective to empower the Copyright Board to fix royalties for licensing and assignment of work and ensure payments to artists. Thank u members of the house,” Humayun tweeted.

Shafaat Ali also took to Twitter to

Fakhar e Alam said, “Something that should have been done many many years ago…but finally happening…thank you for doing this…hope many artists will benefit from this and when they most need support they could tap into this. Great news.”

“Hight time and I Seriously hope that you succeed,” actor-writer Vasay Chaudhry lauded.

“This is a solid start in the legislature… for the preservation of our culture and arts, preserve our artists,” Tweeted Omair Rana.

Sinf-e-Ahan star Ramsha Khan while retweeting the senator’s tweet and wrote, “This is such great news. The first step in the right direction of paying royalties for artists. Thank you, Faisal Javed Khan.”
