Star Trek: Section 31 Review – A New Chapter in the Star Trek Universe

It may not resonate well due to its disappointing character development and lack of plot coherence

Star Trek: Section 31 is a new film in Star Trek Universe that premiered on January 24, 2025, exclusively on Paramount+.

The movie features Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as Philippa Georgiou, a character originally from Star Trek: Discovery. In this instalment, Georgiou collaborates with Section 31, a clandestine division of Starfleet responsible for covert operations aimed at protecting the United Federation of Planets.

Section 31 was first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and is characterized as an autonomous intelligence and defence organization. Its creation was intended to explore the darker aspects of the Federation’s operations, contrasting with its utopian ideals. The name “Section 31” derives from Article 14, Section 31 of the Starfleet Charter, which permits extraordinary measures in times of crisis, including sabotage and assassination.

The story builds up as Georgiou is recruited by Alok Sahar to combat a significant threat known as the Godsend, a device she created.

The film delves into various unanswered questions from previous Star Trek narratives, including:

  • The Succession in the Terran Empire: The film explores why there was a brutal competition to replace Georgiou as Emperor, highlighting the violent nature of the Mirror Universe.
  • Rachel Garrett’s Assignment: It raises questions about why Rachel Garrett, a respected Starfleet officer, was assigned to Section 31—implying it may have been a punishment rather than a reward.
  • San’s Escape: The story also follows San, Georgiou’s servant, who fakes his death to escape the Terran Empire, suggesting deeper conspiracies involving other characters from the Star Trek universe.

While the film attempts to expand on the lore of Section 31 and its implications within the broader Star Trek universe, its disappointing character development and lack of plot coherence may hinder its impact.
