Supreme Court of Pakistan puts ban on airing Indian content on TV Channels

According to the latest development, the Supreme Court while hearing petition of United Producers Association (UPA) against telecast of Indian Content on TV channels at Karachi Registry on 27th of October, has ordered complete ban on Indian content on all Pakistani channels with immediate effect.

Hearing the case relating to airing of foreign content on the National media at Supreme Court’s Karachi Registry, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar showed his resentment. He remarked that if India is shutting off our dams than why shouldn’t we allow its channels to be broadcast here, reports news source.

Chief Justice questioned, “Someone is trying to create hindrance in constructing dams into Pakistan, choking our water, and we cannot off-air their content?”
“Shut Indian content immediately, only content meeting criteria, should be aired”, said CJP.

On reaching upon the UPA Mubashir Inam spokesperson of UPA, about the recent verdict, he told OyeYeah that the Producers Association is waiting for the detailed judgement. After which they will release a statement.

The detailed judgement was later shared on social media.

To be noted, it was Lahore High court Last year, lifted ban allowing Indian movies, dramas and audio content to go on-air by dismissing PEMRA’s notification. Earlier in the year 2017, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) introduced the ban. The restriction was then imposed on the Indian content which was airing on both televisions as well as the FM radio channels.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has also initiated crackdown against illegal DTH across the country in August 2016.

It was earlier on October 25, CJP expressed his dislike over performance of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and customs for failing to control swarm of illegal dish channels, while hearing case regarding ‘grey trafficking’.
