Netflix’s The Crown under fire for changing lines in Queen’s 1992 speech

The Crown's version of events has ‘made up’ lines in Queen Elizabeth's historic Annus Horribilis speech.

Netflix show The Crown has come under fire for changing lines in Queen’s 1992 speech!

The award-winning Netflix series’ new season has boasted another controversy of making up lines from a speech by the Queen.

The latest claims came after reports made rounds on the internet that the series based on Britain’s royals, has ‘made up’ lines in Queen Elizabeth’s historic Annus Horribilis speech.

In November 1992, Queen Elizabeth II spoke at London’s Guildhall following a number of scandals and just four days after the fire which burnt down part of her home at Windsor Castle.

In the words of her memorable speech, the Queen said the year of her Ruby Jubilee was not one “on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure.”

“In the words of one of my more sympathetic correspondents, it has turned out to be an ‘Annus Horribilis.’”

As reported by The Sun, The Crown writers have added new lines for their version, which will include Imelda Staunton, who plays the Queen in the hit Netflix series, acknowledging “the errors of the past.”

The Crown’s version of events differs significantly, however, with Imelda Staunton playing the Queen referring to ‘errors of the past, which in reality was not said.

The Crown Season 5, which follows the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, will be released on the streaming site on 9 November 2022.

This will be the first season of the series to be released after both the death of Prince Philip on 9 April 2021 and the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022.

A TV insider said: “Netflix can argue about what may or may not have happened behind closed doors to justify some of their storylines.

“But they’ve essentially rewritten history by changing the speech.

“This will only add to the sense that The Crown is taking huge liberties with the truth and unfairly causing untold damage to the reputation of the monarchy.

“It also feels highly insensitive given that the Queen only passed away last month, and the nation is trying to rally around the royal family.”

The previous four seasons of the series The Crown are available to stream on Netflix.

The latest hint from the insider has left the Brits fuming on social media:
