At the 2025 Met Gala, BLACKPINK’s Lisa faced significant backlash for wearing an outfit that appeared to feature images of civil rights icon Rosa Parks embroidered on her underwear, visible beneath sheer tights and a black embellished blazer.

The outfit was designed by Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Creative Director Pharrell Williams and included intricate lace embroidery by artist Henry Taylor, who stitched portraits of figures from his life into the ensemble.

Many social media users criticised the choice as disrespectful and culturally insensitive, especially given the placement of Rosa Parks’ image on intimate apparel.

Critics highlighted the insensitivity of using such a revered historical figure’s likeness on underwear, calling the design “tone-deaf” and inappropriate for the Met Gala’s 2025 theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which celebrated Black heritage and excellence.

The controversy was intensified by resurfaced footage from a month earlier showing Lisa and fellow BLACKPINK members allegedly using the n-word during audition performances, which had not been publicly addressed by the artists. This context led some fans to view the outfit choice as particularly problematic and disrespectful.

While some defended Lisa’s fashion-forward and bold approach, praising her overall styling and confidence, the predominant reaction was one of disappointment and criticism toward both Lisa and the creative team behind the outfit.

Louis Vuitton has not issued a public statement clarifying the intent behind the embroidered faces or addressing the controversy as of now.
