Dolce & Gabbana cancels China fashion show after racism accusation

Dolce & Gabbana has canceled the Shanghai fashion show hours before its scheduled time, after an outcry over promotional videos that many people criticized for being racist.

The Italian luxury label in an email to international daily said, “For the moment, please consider this event as suspended until further notice from Dolce&Gabbana”.

In an Instagram post, the fashion label also made the clarification about its Insta being hacked: “Our Instagram account has been hacked. So has the account of Stefano Gabbana. Our legal office is urgently investigating. We are very sorry for any distress caused by these unauthorized posts, comments and direct messages. We have nothing but respect for China and the people of China. Dolce & Gabbana”.

As being reported, Dolce & Gabbana angered Chinese authorities, celebrities and others with the videos posted on social media, which featured an Asian model trying to eat various Italian foods with chopsticks.

According to CNN, the videos, meant to promote what the company called “The Great Show,” are narrated by a male voice who tells the model things like, “don’t use the chopsticks as knives” and “just use your chopsticks like pliers”.

The narrator also apparently mispronounces the brand’s name, which some reportedly interpreted as mocking the Chinese.

According to various media reports, 24 models from the China Bently Modeling Agency refused to attend the planned fashion show. As well as a number of Chinese celebrities, including Zhang Ziyi, Li Bingbing, Chen Kun and Wang Xiaoming, also chose to not to attend the fashion show.

This is not the first time that Dolce & Gabbana has fallen for a controversy.

Gabbana, was in in hot water earlier this year, when he criticized Selena Gomez’s looks, drawing anger from plenty of the singer’s fans, including Miley Cyrus.

They have also been back-lashed for their public support of Melania Trump.

Both, Gabbana and business partner Domenico Dolce had made offensive remarks about sexual assault, gay families and IVF.
