The 20th century period drama series “Downton Abbey” is making its comeback as a movie

It is now officially confirmed that the Emmy winning British television series “Downton Abbey”, is coming back but this time on the big screen. The movie is in the works and the production is reported to be starting in summer.

Set in the 20th century, the period drama series followed the lives of the Crawley family, headed by the Earl of Grantham, and their servants as they navigate through the changing times from the Edwardian heyday of the British aristocracy, to World War I and the changing times of 1920s. The six season television series aired on Britain´s ITV from 2010 to 2015, and in the U.S on PBS.

The original principal cast that includes Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville, are reported to set to reprise their roles for the big-screen production as well.

Those who followed the entire series keenly would remember that Downton Abbey ended in 1926 with daughter Edith Crawley marrying and outranking the rest of the family, sister Mary expecting a second child, and butler and lady´s maid Bates and Anna welcoming their first child.

Brian Percival, who also directed the series pilot, will be directing the movie. He is known for directing “The Book Thief” and “About a Girl,” The screenwriter Julian Fellowes, along with the producers Gareth Neame, Liz Trubridge and Nigel Merchant, will also be returning back. The film will be distributed by Focus Features and Universal Pictures International.

Till yet no release date has been announced by the production, from Carnival Films, and the producers have also declined to comment on the plot. But it is being reported that only certain characters will be reappearing in the film but the creative team behind the movie will include many of the people who have worked on the award winning show.
