Durj Makes Pakistan Proud, Screening Today at Cannes

Durj – a real story based movie on cannibalism – is all set to screen at Cannes Film Festival today at 4 p.m. (France) and 7 p.m. (Pakistan). Starring Sherry Shah and Shamoon Abbasi, also at the helm of the film, the movie is set for worldwide release on October 11, 2019.

Dodi Khan – producer and actor – will be representing Durj at the prestigious festival today. Earlier, an ecstatic Shamoon had taken it to social media to announce his participation at Cannes; however, in a later development Shamoon will now be in Istanbul for some matters pertaining to the global release.

“Indeed proud moment for me as a director, and will surely regret not being able to be present in such a prestigious moment!” said the Waar actor on his Facebook.

Durj reflects back on life of two cannibal brothers who were caught red-handed in 2011 while consuming flesh of corpses in a graveyard. While the brothers were freed in next few years – due to lack of laws on cannibalism – the horrific tale still lived. Shamoon, who had earlier faced unsupportive behavior from the distributors in Pakistan due to film’s out of the blue genre, had then chosen to work on international release.

The film will be released in UK, USA, Oman, Qatar, UAE and Kuwait in October, however Pakistani audiences might have to wait a little longer till the director and CEO Shaam Films can arrange a release in the country.

As per Shamoon, he took this measure to ensure that no other filmmaker or students who wish to make movies on different subjects in Pakistan have to suffer in future. He believes his film’s international success will be a lesson for Pakistani distributors who only seek safe avenues for profit.
