Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Brings Forward Strong Competition for Lion King

Live action remake of 90s popular animated movie, Lion King has so far made $350 million in its 10 days of business in America. This weekend too, Disney’s juggernaut clenched its tight hold at the box office with another $75.5 million in its pockets.

However this weekend also witnessed opening of Quentin Tarantino’s latest offering Once Upon a Time in Hollywood featuring star studded cast of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. Needless to say, Tarantino’s release did successfully make a mark at the box office as it garnered audience’s praise and a total of $40 million at the American box office on its opening weekend.

The movie also brought one of the biggest openings for any of Tarantino’s movies and claimed a massive $16.8 million on its first day of screening i.e. Friday.

On the other end Jon Favreau’s Lion King that has become the fourth highest grossing movie of 2019, continued to hold its number one spot at the box office. The movie has now earned a total of $963 million with an international earning of $612 million to its credit.

Whether Tarantino’s cinematic genius coupled with Pitt and DiCaprio’s gigantic presence on-screen enable Once Upon a Time in Hollywood dent Lion King’s strong hold on box office is something time will tell. For now, the former has proven its mettle on the first weekend with a significant chunk on the box office window.
