Parasite that has made history as the first film from the country to get Oscar's nomination - OyeYeah News
South Korean film Parasite that bagged a Golden Globe last week has made history as the first film from the country to get Oscar’s nomination. The Bong Joon Ho directorial is now running for the best picture and best international film.
“Korean cinema has a long history,” said Bong in a November interview with Variety.
“There are many masters that have yet to be introduced to the Western audience. It would be great if people take more interest in Korean cinema due to my nomination,” he had hoped.
The film after its successful run at the box office with $25.4 million in the US and $132.3 million globally has already garnered quite a lot of attention in South Korea. The film also earned the best director award for Joon Ho in addition to an original screenplay with Jin Won Han.
Earlier at its premiere at Cannes, the film also bagged Palme d’Or, Cannes’ highest honor of the festival for its captivating storyline.
Parasite is a story of two families that revolves around class discrimination, greed, and power hunger. Last week a mini-series adaptation of the film was also announced by HBO.
Alongside Parasite, Yi Seung-Jun’s In the Absence has become the first South Korean movie to be nominated for the best documentary award.
