Robert Downey Jr. Jumps in to Defend Avengers Against Martin Scorsese Comments

Robert Downey Jr. who plays Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, has become the latest team member to respond to Martin Scorsese’s criticism on Avengers films.

While talking at The Howard Stern Show, the actor stated that while he was not personally offended by Scorsese’s comments, his remark of labeling Avengers as ‘not cinema’ did not make sense.

“It’d be like saying Howard Stern isn’t radio,” laughed Downey.

However taking a passive aggressive approach, Iron Man did went on to say that he appreciated Scorsese’s comments which are definitely not out of jealousy.

“I appreciate his opinion because I think, it’s like anything, we need all of the perspectives so we can come to centre and move on,” said Downey.

“By the way, there’s a lot to be said about how these genre movies – and I was happy to be a part of the ‘problem’, if there is one – denigrated the form of cinema,” he added.

When asked if thought Scorsese was jealous of MCU or Avengers, this is how Downey responded. “Of course not, he’s Martin Scorsese,” he said.

Robert also praised Avengers with reference to his own film’s characters.

He said that he himself viewed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as “this very large, multi-headed Hydra at this point”.

Martin Scorsese had earlier stirred controversy by passing remarks on Avengers and MCU films by calling them not his cup of tea and more like theme parks than cinema. Many members of MCU team responded to the filmmaker’s comments.
