First Rust Trailer Drops, Featuring Alec Baldwin as an Outlaw After On-Set Tragedy

Following legal battles and resumed filming in 2023, the movie is set to release in theaters and on digital platforms on May 2, 2025

The first trailer for Alec Baldwin’s Western film Rust has been released, marking a significant milestone for the long-delayed project.

The movie, set in 1880s Kansas, features Baldwin as Harland Rust, an outlaw who comes out of hiding to rescue his grandson Lucas (played by Patrick Scott McDermott) after the boy is sentenced to hang for accidentally killing a rancher.

Together, they flee toward Mexico while being pursued by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a bounty hunter known as “Preacher” (Travis Fimmel). The cast also includes Frances Fisher and Jake Busey.

The trailer highlights intense Western action scenes, including shootouts and dramatic horseback chases, while also showcasing emotional moments between Baldwin’s character and his grandson.

The film explores themes of redemption and the moral complexities of frontier justice.

The cinematography, originally overseen by Halyna Hutchins before her tragic death in 2021, is prominently featured and praised in the trailer. Bianca Cline completed the cinematography after Hutchins’ passing.

The production of Rust was overshadowed by the accidental shooting on set that killed Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. Baldwin was rehearsing a scene when a prop gun discharged a live round.

Following legal battles and resumed filming in 2023, the movie is set to release in theaters and on digital platforms on May 2, 2025
