Furiosa Cannes World Premiere: George Miller’s celebrated installment gets 8-minute standing ovation

Anya Taylor-Joy plays the titular character first essayed by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth film of George Miller’s celebrated action franchise had its world premiere at the Cannes Films Festival on Wednesday night.

Miller and members of his cast, including stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, attended the grand premiere.

The film received a standing ovation of 7 minutes and 50 seconds as soon as the final frame was played in Cannes’ massive Palais.

Miller told the crowd, “We worked very hard on this film, and it’s been very interesting to see what you make of it.”

Anya Taylor-Joy plays the titular character first essayed by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road.

Furiosa, a $168 million film, is set to release in theatres on May 24.

This fifth film of the franchise comes nine years to the month after the most recent prior instalment of the franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road, which starred Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.

It will be released 45 years after Miller’s original Mad Max film became the most profitable film of all time to that point,

The original Mad Max grossed $100 million on a $350,000 budget.
