‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ Remake to Hit Theaters in Summer 2027
This sequel follows the first live-action adaptation of the beloved animated franchise

Universal Pictures has officially announced that a live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be released in theaters on June 11, 2027.
This sequel follows the first live-action adaptation of the beloved animated franchise, which is set to premiere on June 13, 2025. Both films are directed by Dean DeBlois, who also helmed the original animated trilogy.
The live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon reimagines the story of Hiccup and Toothless, focusing on their friendship and adventures in the Viking village of Berk. The sequel will continue the narrative five years later, featuring a now 20-year-old Hiccup as he faces a villain intent on controlling a dragon army.
The cast includes Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, and Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast.
The live-action adaptations aim to stay true to the spirit of the animated films while adding depth to character dynamics and expanding the mythology of the world. Universal’s confidence in the franchise has been bolstered by positive early reactions to the first live-action film, which was showcased at CinemaCon 2025.
