Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga Return for ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’-The Final Chapter in the Haunted Saga

The film is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

In a spine-tingling announcement that has horror fans buzzing, the Conjuring Universe prepares to close its darkest chapter with The Conjuring: Last Rites.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back as the legendary paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, stepping once again into the shadows to confront a terrifying new evil.

Set against the eerie backdrop of the infamous Smurl family haunting, this ninth instalment promises to deliver the heart-pounding scares and emotional depth that have defined the franchise.

Directed by Michael Chaves, th/e film plunges audiences into a world where demonic forces lurk just beyond the veil, threatening to unravel everything the Warrens have fought to protect.

The first trailer teases a return to the franchise’s roots, focusing on the family dynamic and the emotional toll of the Warrens’ work. It opens with the haunted artefact room and ominous warnings, then builds to scenes of demonic possession, exorcisms, and a sinister force targeting the Warrens. The tone is described as darker and more personal, with Ed and Lorraine confronting their legacy and the finality of their work.

The film is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The Warrens have retired from exorcism work following Ed’s heart attack, but are drawn back into the supernatural when a new case emerges.

The plot centres on the infamous Smurl family haunting in Pennsylvania, one of the most publicised cases from the Warrens’ career. The Smurl family, portrayed by Rebecca Calder (Janet) and Elliot Cowan (Jack), reportedly experienced a series of disturbing supernatural events in their West Pittston home, ranging from strange odours and voices to violent attacks. This case was widely covered in the media and became the subject of the book The Haunted: One Family’s Nightmare and a 1991 TV movie.
