Choosing the Right Diaper for Your Baby

By Nancy Baker

One of the most confusing things for new parents is choosing the best quality diapers. Newborn babies have different builds and grow at different rates. Luckily, diapers are sized not by age but by weight. However, the weights tend to overlap for most diaper sizes.

The main concern is how you decide which diaper size is better for your baby, especially is your baby’s weight ranges in between sizes. Sometimes, just because the size indicated on the diaper pack has been specified for a particular age, doesn’t mean that is will be well-suited for your baby’s weight.

We recommend that you sample diaper sizes before buying them in bulk. While sampling diapers, make sure they have a snug fit around their legs. Snug-fit for diapers is very crucial despite how fast a diaper absorbs. When a diaper has a gap, the liquid will escape, and you will end up experiencing leaks.

When leaks are imminent, you will either have to go back down or go up a diaper size. If you notice red marks on your baby’s thighs, it means that your baby has outgrown that diaper size. Gaps indicate that the diaper is too large, while red marks on the leg area suggest that the diaper is too small.

Seeing as blowouts and leaks are common as a result of incorrect sizes, it is crucial to ensure that you choose the right diaper size. Hence, as a new parent, you should expect to change thousands of diapers in your baby’s first year.

Newborn babies can use 10-12 diapers daily on average. However, because no baby is the same, some will require more changes than others because some don’t poop or pee as frequently. Babies who are breastfed have frequent bowel movements because they will either pee or poop after every feeding. Formula-fed babies, on the other hand, could experience bowel movements at least once a day.

Hence, if you are a breastfeeding mother, expect to change diapers at least six days a day. If this is not the case for a breastfed baby, it’s an indication that your baby isn’t getting enough milk. Luckily, the bowel movements slow down after the first month for both breastfed and formula-fed babies.

What to Consider When Choosing Diapers

Absorbency

How well the diaper will absorb leaks and blowouts should be the first thing you consider because this also determines the number of diapers you will be using in a day. Snug-fit diapers are more likely to absorb better than ill-fitting diapers. The material used will also determine how well the diaper absorbs leaks.

Affordability

Babies come with added expense, so it wiser to make sure that you shop for diapers within your budget. Diapers can be a costly affair if you don’t settle for affordable options. This is especially crucial for newborn babies because they use too many diapers in a day.

Leak-Proof

How much a diaper brand leaks regularly will determine how many diapers you will be buying and how much you will be spending on diapers. Make sure to choose a diaper brand that offers guaranteed leak-proof for a sustainable amount of hours.

Ease of Use

With newborn babies, you need helping hands. Hence, sometime, you may need a babysitter, daycare personnel, or grandparents to watch over your baby. In such situations, it helps to make sure that you buy diapers that are easy to use. In this case, your best choice is disposable diapers because they don’t require too much effort.

Materials

The material used determines all the above considerations. Some babies have sensitive skin, so it matters what material you opt to use against your baby’s skin. For babies with sensitive skin, consider materials like bamboo, organic cotton, cotton, and hemp because these materials are more breathable.
