Comet Fragment Illuminates Skies Over Spain and Portugal

A fragment of a comet was spotted over the skies of Spain and Portugal creating a stunning light display.

This event occurred on the night of May 19, 2024, when the fragment entered the Earth’s atmosphere and burned up, creating a bright meteor visible across the region.

According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the meteor seemed to be a fragment of a comet that broke off and passed through Earth’s atmosphere at a height of around 35 miles.

The eyewitnesses described the phenomenon as a spectacular fireball that illuminated the night sky for several seconds, with one Lisbon resident saying the dazzling display “felt like a movie”.
